He is the sympathy killer par excellence: Bad breath . And he’s sneaky. Because those affected usually don’t smell anything themselves, while acquaintances prefer to keep their distance,

instead of referring to it – halitosis, the technical term, is a taboo subject. The fact that it is estimated that around a quarter of the population suffers from this does not detract from this. Contact points where professional help can be obtained are all the more important.

In 90 percent of all cases, the causes of bad breath lie in the oral cavity, where bacteria multiply well in a warm, humid climate. You feel good in gum pockets, between teeth and in the back of the tongue. There they feed on the remains of protein-rich and sugary foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products or chocolate and release foul-smelling sulfur compounds in the process. Periodontitis – Risk Factor for Severe COVID-19 Course

 

Results of a current study show a connection between the presence of periodontitis and a severe course of COVID-19. Accordingly, COVID-19 patients with periodontitis have a higher risk, including for admission to the intensive care unit, than periodontally healthy COVID-19 patients.
In doing so, this study underscores the importance of periodontal health in terms of prevention and possibly even management of COVID-19 complications.

Gum Problems During Pregnancy

In addition to physical changes, pregnancy also involves numerous hormonal and immunological changes. The changed immune responses have a decisive influence on inflammatory processes. In the oral cavity, this is often noticeable in the form of inflammatory changes in the gums. Signs are redness, swelling and bleeding, for example when brushing your teeth. This can be very uncomfortable and stress the pregnancy. Women who have had periodontitis (inflammation of the gums) before pregnancy have an increased risk of premature birth or preeclampsia and must pay particular attention to such signs.

Consistent and thorough oral hygiene during pregnancy is therefore essential! This should be accompanied by regular dental check-ups and professional teeth cleaning at the beginning and at the end of the pregnancy.

Christmas is almost around the corner! During this pre-Christmas period, we all like to eat the sweet temptations in the form of gingerbread, homemade cookies, cinnamon stars, coconut macaroons, etc. We also like to associate this time with exactly these delicacies!

It is therefore all the more important to take care of our teeth a little more carefully. It is best to brush your teeth in between times soon after the sweet temptations. Our teeth will surely thank us after Christmas!
